The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The former head of state was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.

This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a document approving the detention, the judge said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a legislator, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could "pray for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's determination was the chance of his "relocation to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of arranging to request asylum through a embassy office", a statement said.

The legal document underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is located around 13km from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist US President Donald Trump, causing him to impose a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.

The former president is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a detention review on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that the former president be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he demanded regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

The former president was convicted of heading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the presidential race to his political opponent, Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plan which encompassed plans to assassinate the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was prevented because it didn't receive the backing of the military leaders. Lula was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed official structures in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
