The artist has donated the full amount of his £25,000 award prize money to the trust for venues, which works to protect the Britain's independent live music spots.

The star was awarded the cheque on 16 October as his new release the album was declared the best record of the last 12 months.

The musician has decided to donate the funds to the trust, in acknowledgment of the vital role local spots played in his initial steps.

"I personally couldn't be pursuing what I am doing today if it hadn't been for all the gigs I performed around the North East, and elsewhere, when I was just getting going," remarked the artist. "These spaces are iconic, but they are facing challenges."

Beginning in 2023, over 150 of these locations have ceased operations – about one-sixth of the entire UK sector.

Over the past year, top acts including Pulp, the group Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Sheeran have all backed the Music Venues Trust in its initiatives to help venues survive, by including a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which supports independent venues.

Fender also participated, collecting more than £100,000 on his recent tour to help numerous grassroots venues across Britain.

These funds supported venues that were confronting potential shutdown due to issues caused by flooding, fires and personal losses, as well as licensing issues, conflicts and noise complaints.

Additional spaces received funding support in improving infrastructure and gear that positively impacted artists and concertgoers.

"The concept that money from shows in big venues helps the smaller venues, where it begins for performers like me, is just sensible," Sam Fender has stated.

He is not the first artist to give his award winnings to charitable organizations.

When Pulp won the prize in the mid-90s for their release Different Class, lead singer Jarvis Cocker stated that the act would donate their cash to the organization War Child.

That year, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite shared her bounty across multiple good causes, like the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"I also donated a grand to the center, to their gymnastics class, because I practiced gymnastics when I was younger and they required better apparatus," she explained to a publication.

In recent years, they gave their winnings to the community center that developed their band, in addition to other local music groups.

And the 1994 recipients they contributed their prize to a MS organization after a friend was identified with the disease.

"Winning was ample," stated vocalist Small. "The money was the extra but we didn't need the extra, because we had the honor. So our victory affected another person's life."

In the past week, the Music Venues Trust announced it had rescued several grassroots venues in south-east England, by bringing them into community ownership.

The first in Southampton and The Croft in Bristol were bought under the public acquisition initiative, which is funded by a national body and enthusiasts who purchase "ownership units" in the buildings.
