The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
